A Peek into the Apothecary

Petal Power

Petal Power

We buy flowers for birthdays, anniversaries, get well soon, grief and other major life events. Why do you think that is? What about buying flowers for no reason at all?

Flowers do more than just beautify our homes; they also have a powerful impact on our mood and well-being. The vibrant colors, pleasant scents, and natural beauty of flowers can trigger positive emotional responses, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. Scientifically, exposure to flowers has even been shown to stimulate dopamine production and lower cortisol levels, instantly making us feel happier and more at ease. Many flowers release volatile organic compounds that contribute to their unique fragrances—these compounds can influence air quality and have mild aromatherapeutic effects.

Flowers don’t have to be expensive or arranged perfectly. Part of the fun is picking different types and relaxing while arranging them. What are you drawn to? Do you always gravitate towards a certain type of flower, colors, or aromas? Or do you like to go for something different every time? Do you try to match the flower to the occasion?

If you are buying flowers at the grocery store – check to see if they have a “clearance” section. Many times, these flowers are just “past their sell-by date”, but with a little water and trimming of the stems, they can perk up and last much longer than they do in the store. I, for one, always feel so bad for the flowers in the clearance section and try to rescue them whenever I can.

Placing fresh blooms in your living space not only brightens the environment visually but also engages the senses, enhancing overall wellness. By incorporating flowers into your weekly routine, you tap into the science-backed benefits of nature’s petal power.
