A Peek into the Apothecary

Wintering - A Lesson from Nature

Wintering - A Lesson from Nature

This time of year is normally when we are encouraged to make new resolutions and start over. However, I randomly came across a social media post about “wintering” (which then took over my whole algorithm haha) and I realized I’ve been looking at the start of the new year all wrong! The concept of “wintering” centers around the idea that after the chaos of the holidays, we should be resting and filling up our cup again, especially since it’s still cold with limited daylight. Then as we move through the season towards Spring, we start coming out of our cocoons and get ready to bloom like the flowers.

This philosophy struck a chord with me. After a particularly stressful year, all I want is quiet – I’ve likened it to hibernating! I have felt off and only want to tuck in to a safe space. My creativity only comes in little mini bursts and then disappears again, which was frustrating at first, but I’ve leaned into it, learned to accept it and have had fun with the little sparks.

For as much as I promote self-care and creating down time, I’m not always very good at following my own advice. This year I finally did and admitted that my cup was literally empty. I said no to things I would normally agree to. As hard as it was at first, I made myself sit still on the couch and watch TV – and do nothing else. I go to bed earlier (because the dog demands his nighttime routine haha). I have stopped apologizing for saying no and choosing to hibernate instead. And it feels right. Wintering is all about nurturing yourself and finding joy in the quiet moments of rest and renewal. And now, I’m slowing coming out of my cocoon and am getting excited for Spring!
