Fall is the time of year where the urge to tuck in and get cozy settles in as the days start getting darker earlier, the weather starts getting cooler, and the holiday season starts approaching.
If you had a comfort box for the days where the chaos and noise begin to overwhelm you, what would you have in it? What would be a guaranteed way to bring yourself a little gentleness, calm, and comfort?
Would it be bags of your favorite tea, or a bottle of wine? A soft cozy blanket or your favorite pair of soft sweatpants? Snacks, sweet or salty or both?
It doesn’t even have to be a literal box. The self-care practice of creating a ‘comfort box’ could be watching a movie that always brings you joy or listening to a specific music playlist. You could light a candle, curl up in your favorite spot, write out affirmations, or read a magazine or a book you’ve been waiting to read.
I’ve got a handful of special memories in my comfort box that I go back to when life gets overwhelming. I remember when my kids were younger, all of us getting home from work and school on days when it was starting to get darker earlier and there was a little chill in the air, we’d change into comfy clothes, light a few candles, and sit around the kitchen table as I made a stew for dinner and the kids worked on homework, chatting and just spending time together. Thinking back on moments like that never fails to bring me a sense of calm that wraps around me like a cozy blanket.
