With the Fall season, we naturally turn to warmer, cozier, and grounding essential oils that encompass the season. One of the oils we love at L’Aura Botanicals is the essential oil of Patchouli so we thought we’d open up the Apothecary and share some information with you about one our favorites.
Essential Oil of Patchouli (Botanical name: Pogostemon cablin)
Aroma: Deeply earthy, woody, musky, balsamic, and subtly sweet, with smoky and herbaceous nuances.
Perfumery note: Base note and natural fixative.
Blends well with: Bergamot, Sweet Orange, Lavender, Geranium, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Frankincense, and Vetiver.
EMOTIONAL BENEFITS
Patchouli is traditionally associated with grounding, steadiness, and emotional comfort. Its rich, lingering aroma may help create a sense of being present and settled, particularly during busy or overstimulating moments. In personal rituals, many people use it to support calm, ease nervous tension, soften feelings of emotional fatigue, and foster quiet confidence. Patchouli’s warm, earthy character can also make a space feel cozy, reflective, and secure.
- For grounding: Add one drop to a diffuser blend with Cedarwood or Frankincense.
- For a brighter mood: Pair a small amount with Sweet Orange or Bergamot.
- For evening calm: Blend with Lavender or Sandalwood and use as part of a quiet wind-down routine.
SAFETY NOTE!
Patchouli is highly concentrated and its aroma can dominate a blend, so begin with a small amount. Dilute it appropriately with a base carrier oil before applying it to the skin, avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes, and stop use if irritation occurs. Keep essential oils away from children and pets. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use. Do not ingest essential oils unless directed by a suitably trained clinician.
